Diorama: Little Crab Island

I was making a little crab rig for another project, and it grew into this. A perfect companion for this week’s island theme.

Made for Sketchfab Weekly Challenge 12: Island

Made in Blender, with accessory work in Krita and Substance Designer.

Little Crab Island

Blender Render and 360 spin

Animated crab, featuring animated environment/scenery details.

Particularly proud of this slight of hand/claw to loop the eating animation. I learned a lot from my earlier models' rigging experiments, and got to put it all together here.

The scene is tied together as one rig, with individual sub elements: crab, grass/clutter environment, as well as standalone bits (the chest lid, fish, and water level)

Comparison of the bare island mesh vs the final dressed up version. It was a good opportunity for me to play with different textures made in Substance Designer

Learned some new techniques for adding more detail to grounds, and for blending surfaces together. I used some layered planes on top of the base island mesh, a few shader tricks, and some paintbrush strokes to make a big difference.

This project started out as a simple animated crab rig, but the Sketchfab Weekly theme (Island) was too convenient to pass up, and it was a good chance to really elevate this model and make something nice.

I'm especially grateful about the past models I've made where I really struggled with rigging concepts; I've learned a lot from my trials and many errors. I've gotten a lot better at diagnosing and fixing my bugs now.

Though there's always one bug that surprises you just when you think you're done. In this case, a Majora's Maskian chunk of errant coconut looming threateningly over the island
